Club Activities

Monthly general meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month except for July and August. These meetings are open to the public!

We also organize an impressive number of other activities such as educational seminars, public outreach events, as well as group observing sessions throughout the year.

What You Missed!

Our club has received a LX200 8" from an anonymous donor!

We've all heard the "baby in a basket" story. Well, one of our members (Bert) visited the observatory a few weeks ago and found a LX200 telescope in the driveway. It had a note saying that it was being donated.

The hand controller needs some work but the optics are in pristine condition.

Thank You Anonymous!

Thursday January 5 at 7:30 - Monthly Meeting, Guest Speaker, Dr. Michael Reid "The Big Controversy Over the Big Bang "

"The Big Bang, along with evolution and anthropogenic climate change, is one of the most controversial and poorly understood Big Ideas in science."

This was a fascinating presentation that touched on the science AND religion (always a lively combination) of the origins of our universe.

Dr Reid and Ev in "deep" conversation.

Show & Tell  - Andy's new Sky Window

Andy was proud to show off his new "Sky Window". What an ingenious invention. All the benefits of binocular astronomy but much more comfortable.

Monthly Meeting and "SWAP-MEET"!!!! Thursday December 1 - 7:30 @ Royal Canadian Legion in Waterdown

Guest Speaker - Brady Johnson of KW Telescopes - “Line Filtered Astrophotography With One-Shot Colour Cameras” , New Products

Even if astrophotography is not you bag, you will learn about some of the same techniques used by the Hubble Space Telescope. For you shutter-bugs, learn how you can do astrophotography from even the most light polluted skies! Brady’s partner, Brian Dernesch will also be showing off some new gadgets.

KW Telescopes is NOT your average astronomy dealer. Brady & Brian are credited with an impressive number of inventions that have gained world-wide popularity. Even if you are not an astrophotographer you will find this to be a really interesting presentation. Come and learn about the latest technology and how it produces those amazing images.

What is a Swap Meet? It's like a garage sale for astronomy gear. If you have stuff that you are not using, here is your chance to sell it to someone who needs it! One persons trash is another's treasure! Stay tuned for more details.

Saturday November 19, 2011 : 8:00 PM - David Dunlap Observatory

What a fun time. And we had a great turnout - 42 in all!

Unfortunately, we were not able to have a look through the big beast thanks to clouds and high wind. But it was still a really fun event!

Motivated by Neptune's First Birthday, which occurred in 2011, Peter told the slightly scandalous scientific story of the discovery of Neptune, including the surprising twist in the story that took place just 13 years ago and is still unraveling.
